School's Out For Summer...

And if you are me it's been out for way longer than just the last few weeks/days.

The prep and packing for the move and then the chaos swirl of moving, unpacking, new dog, visiting MIL, working away for weeks husband pretty much adds up to  a big ol homeschooling FAIL  for us.

The kids are doing some basic grammar, math, reading etc. most days but its not consistent and not terribly exciting.

I'm feeling tremendous pressure from myself to get a plan together for this coming year. To see if my slacking has caused them to fall behind in any area. To get my act together. Sadly I just feel completely unable to even figure out a starting point. I have no idea what to do or how I want to do it.

I'm feeling so uninspired with everything. What do you do when you feel like that? How do you figure out a jumping off place to kick start the other ideas?

I'm definitely feeling like a harried homeschooling housewife lately!

A bit of homeschooling humor

I'm actually going to use my blog to "blahg"

I rarely talk about HS stuff on here because, well I dunno why really but it just never comes up.

Lately I'm feeling again like I have no idea wtf I'm doing. I honestly think I suck at this and I am not that sure that my kids might not do better going off to school. Okay well that's really not true... I mean hello I live in Louisiana, public school is not an option.

Many of the members of my HS group are free spirited and lean toward the unstructured and child led learning models. I read of how their kids love to explore and learn and do all of this great stuff. You know what my kids love? TV, reading for fun, Wii, goofing off.

Hi, I'm Michelle and I have lazy children...

Don't get me wrong, they are great kids and they have chores (they have to be reminded/nagged to do them) and they will do what they have to do... but not one bit more. Our days are filled with negotiations and compromises. "Do I HAVE to do #3 in my daily grams?" Cameron (12) wanted to do something different today and I suggested he read a book off the shelf. He picked a book of Greek Myths... first thing out of his mouth was "Exactly how long do I HAVE to read?" And what I heard was "I'd hate to do one minute more than I might be required!"

Am I doing something wrong? Am I failing? Do all homeschoolers and parents in general have these fears or am I a total freak... don't answer that. ;)

I just want to feel like I am doing a good job, this is the only one I have and it sucks to feel sub par when it's all you have to accomplish. I want them to be good people and I think they will be but I also want them to be as smart as possible and have the best start they can when they leave my house and I'm afraid that I'm failing hard on that account.

Sigh, tomorrow is another day I guess.

Were we productive today or what!

Started the day with getting dinner in the crock pot before 8am, always a great way to kick off the day!

Today we did spelling and grammar, both of those are daily subjects. Then we started the fun stuff...

We started a composting experiment.
We made paper - we need better tools for that!
I made homemade pizza for lunch
Teagan did a cave painting to go with the first chapter in Story of The World
Tea and I made choc-chip raisin granola bars

Here is a pic of Teag doing her painting, you can see the paper in the bottom corner.

Finished product :D

but i'm feeling much better now.

Onward and upward or some such... right?

I'm supposed to record tonight with Nic and Will so that should be fun.

Tomorrow the kids and I start back to school. This year we are doing a more relaxed Well-Trained Mind approach. I've not actually read TWTM but I know I'm doing a lot of stuff they recommend. lol We are only doing 4 day weeks and should only have 3 subjects a day. Hopefully all 3 of us will have more fun this year.

I have a few sock toy ideas rattling around on my mental list to start this week. My top design plans are Shark, T-Rex and I'm working out the last kinks of a Mermaid. :D I need to get a few things made and uploaded to my etsy because I'm all empty over there and that will never do.

I made dh watch Bring It On! for the first time yesterday. *rofl* I love that movie.

day 4

Part of my HS order from amazon has been shipped and as I was looking over the email I see that I somehow put two of the same study guides in the cart... mother humper. So I wasted $20. GAH, I am an idiot. And sending it back looks like a pita and they are going to charge me for shipping regardless. I think I will just take it to the Home School Cottage and see if Kelda wants to consign it.

I'm going to take our text books and stuff from this past year in on Friday. Time to clean and organize for the new year. We will start back to school as soon as everything arrives and I have a few days to flip through it and decide how best to proceed. I'm looking fwd to it. I have a 7th and a 3rd grader this year!

My bff here in LA has decided to HS her 3 (she has another on the way) and we are going to do art and spanish together, the kids are looking fwd to that part.

I know this was boring to all non HSers but sorry... lol Love ya anyway.

And when did I schedule being able to breathe?

Just a quick whine ( don't have time for a longer one lol) about my schedule for the next week...

Today is Monday and the kids had to go to the dentist - yay no cavities

Tuesday = Homeschool meeting, teen committee and my husband's birthday *love*

Wednesday = Bowling league, Hubby is going to get off work early and surprise us @ the bowling alley because it's Cameron's birthday. Then we are going to go get Cam his gift - a custom bowling ball and go out to dinner.

Thursday = A quietish day, only chess club

Friday = Take cam to his Heroscape game @ the Home School Cottage

Sat = drive back to the cottage for a HS Workshop

Sun = Go bowling with my friends family, our boys share a b-day and then back to her house for a cook out and cake!

Monday = back to the dentist to have one of Teagan's teeth pulled. It's causing her midline to shift to the left... whatever that means. I guess it's bad. lol

Then repeat with committees and bowling and chess and heroscape... every week. BLEH

And in the middle of that somewhere I'm going to find time to make more toys. lol Some are going to the cottage this week, I'm very excited. :D

Quickie time...

Just a super fast update. I finished Sara's order with an octopus.

And finished an order of puppies for my friend Blue's twin daughters. I think they came out very cute.

Teagan got invited to a Build-A-Bear "party" @ the mall by a homeschool friend and she "ordered" a bunny for her friend's gift. Which at least saves me $ so thats a bonus. lol I'm kinda worried that is look self promoting or vain to gift my merchandise but thats silly because why the fuck wouldn't you gift what you make if it is appropriate for the person/occasion? There, issue solved. ;-)
